Artist Statement - FIFTY

"How did it get so late so soon? It's night before it's afternoon. December is here before it's June. My goodness how the time has flown. How did it get so late so soon?" ― Dr. Seuss

Time is a fundamental dimension of the human experience. We use it to coordinate our lives, organise our memories and to make plans. Culturally we think of time as an unstoppable linear flow. Although a problematic concept in physics, we have perfected measuring it, and developed a refined "sense of time" as a mandatory tool for a healthy personal life and professional success.

Our subjective experience of time is however very different from how time is measured. Psychologists and social scientists agree that our experience of time speeds up with age. In a recent scientific study published in the "European Review," Professor Adrian Bejan presented an argument based on the physics of neural signal processing. He hypothesized that, over time, the rate at which we process visual information slows down, and that this is what makes time "speed up" as we grow older.

He argues that: "As we age, the size and complexity of the networks of neurons in our brains increases – electrical signals must traverse greater distances and thus signal processing takes more time. Moreover, ageing causes our nerves to accumulate damage that provides resistance to the flow of electric signals, further slowing processing time." Focusing on visual perception, Bejan suggests that slower processing times result in us perceiving fewer "frames-per-second" – more actual time passes between the perception of each new mental image. This is what leads to time passing more rapidly.

It is within this context that Corné Eksteen, who is turning 50, explores his own personal subjective experience of time speeding up. He uses the number 50 and all its contemporary and pop culture associations as inspiration for a body of work that reflects on 5 decades of lived experience and memory. Visually, the work explores the notion of less "frames-per-second."

Gallery Launch
The Artist's Gallery | Cape Town | South Africa

On Saturday 1 July 2023, The Artists Gallery celebrated its grand opening. With an overwhelming crowd of visitors who all enjoyed the energy, the art, the atmosphere and of course many familiar faces and hellos - as well as a chilled glass of Cap Classique by Graham Beck. Jaret Loggenberg, artist and managing director of the gallery on the popular Bree Street, welcomed the guests and artists in attendance with a short speech.

This gallery has a focus on showcasing artists from South Africa; artists who are all part of the new gallery and who have shared in its success from the beginning. A concept that has been put together with a lot of passion and love for art and the people who create it. The Artists Gallery launched last Saturday, 1 July 2023 with artists who all have one thing in common: A sense of perfection, a desire to grow in their careers and to touch and connect people with their art.

Art is a reflection of the times and a mirror of society. South Africa has a very exciting art scene and it is on display here.

On behalf of all the artists, a heartfelt thank you and we look forward to many visitors and wonderful encounters. The launch exhibition showcases a new portrait by Corné Eksteen

We are thrilled to announce dates and details of Eksteen's next solo exhibition "soundWORKS" This exciting interactive show of new works will open on June 10th at SPACE Curated, Wellington Place, 4 Harbour Road, Hermanus. The exhibition will run until 30 June 2023.

Artist Statement - soundWORKS

Contemporary life is proliferated with audio-visual media. The amalgamation of sounds and images are relatively new in the overall history of human expression and serves as a signifier of our technological advances and continual transition into a digitised world over the last fifty years. Our consumption of audio-visual and multimedia material has become everyday experiences and now represent tools that we consider to be essential in business, cultural expression and entertainment. It is within this context that conceptual contemporary painter Corné Eksteen explores the incorporation of sound into his paintings.

Eksteen removes the linear time-based characteristic of sound in his visualisation approach and creates figurative audio-visual compositions or soundscapes, by focussing on the vibrational nature of sound. This vibrational attribute of both sound and light, often represented graphically as sinusoidal waves constitutes the foundation from which he visually interprets his subject matter. The subject is thus celebrated for both its physical appearance and its incorporated audio properties.

Completed works are scanned into a neural network, utilising several algorithms and AI platforms to interpret the waveforms and colour values within the work. Isolated sinusoidal waveforms inside the images are reverse engineered into an audio file, rooted in a sound bank consisting of over a thousand sound samples captured by the artist. Each work is exhibited with a QR code from which the accompanying AI interpreted soundtrack can be accessed via personal handheld devices.

soundWorks is a re-assessment of visual representations of the world, utilizing several artistic traditions such as portraiture and still life. The work explores the unseen nature of the physical world where all matter vibrates at some frequency and as such, could generate sound.

State of the Art Gallery's Time and Tide Exhibition

Press Release | State of the Art Gallery
Time & Tide (wait for no man) | Group Exhibition

  • 25 January 2023
  • Exhibitions | Press
  • Cape Town
State of the ART's Time & Tide (wait for no man) is a constellation of sculptural objects, paintings, paper collage and printmaking that serve as a meditation on the passing and workings of time; and a recording of everyday life.

The word 'tide' in the title refers to a period of time, such as the changing of the seasons - the context originally given to the expression - and not the rising and falling of the ocean.

The exhibition revolves around the theme of the passage of time: nobody can stop the passing of time, or the processes of nature.
- The imprint of time and the memory of materials
- Weathered textures that withstand the test of time
- Repetitive patterns of tides and shifting sky
- Global warming (time, rising sea levels and climate change wait for no person)

The exhibition, showcasing the work of seven artists including Corné Eksteen, Karla Nixon and Jo Roets will be on show from 15 February - 18 March 2023 at State of the Art Gallery in Cape Town with the official exhibition opening on Saturday, February 25th
