"Mariposa" - A group exhibition curated by Donavan Mynhardt - 01.02.2022 until 02.03.2022

"Among the varied species of insects, butterflies are the most poetic." - Anna Gerhard; Little Creatures

Butterflies are deep and powerful representations of life. Not only are they beautiful, but they also enrapture our minds by their often mysterious, fey-like nature. The magnificent, yet woefully short life of the butterfly closely mirrors the process of spiritual transformation and serves as a continuous reminder that life is fleeting.

Around the world people view this ethereal insect as representing endurance, change, spiritual rebirth, hope and transformation.

Many cultures associate the butterfly with our souls. The Christian religion for example sees the butterfly as a symbol of resurrection. The ancient Meso-Americans in turn believed butterflies to be the souls of women who died during childbirth.

The humble mariposa teaches us the importance of change and that, to become something great, all we need is patience, endurance, and a little bit of faith.

Participating Artists include:
Adele Potgieter, Annette Snyckers, Carla Botes, Chris van Niekerk, Corné Eksteen, Evert Esterhuizen, Ilse Nieman, Jaco Benade, JC Bolke, Jo Roets, Lesley Ireland-Mathew, Lynie Olivier, Malose Pete, Marguerite Roux, Matthew Blackburn, Michele D'Argent, Nadine Hansen, Nazeer Jappie, Phillip Heenop, Ronan Quinlan, Stian Bam, Susan Bloemhof, Talitha Deetlefs and Wendy Gaybba

We are thrilled to announce dates and details of Eksteen's next solo exhibition "waveWORKS" This exciting show of new works will open on January 29th at Art in the Yard Gallery, Heritage Square, 9 Huguenot Street, Franschhoek. The exhibition will run until 21 February 2022.

Artist Statement - waveWORKS

"Energy is neither created nor destroyed only transformed." – Law of Conservation of Energy.

"Energy" has become one of the most important issues steering the cultural and economic discourse of the early 21st century. Every aspect of our lives are influenced by our energy consumption, how that energy is sourced, its environmental impact and its sustainability. The preoccupation with our energy dilemma along with the laws of physics that govern energy, its transformation and behavior and by extension all matter, constitute the conceptual foundation of this body of work.

In 1924 French physicist Louis de Broglie proposed the theory of wave-particle duality. Wave-particle duality holds that light and matter exhibit properties of both particle and wave such as wavelength and frequency, thus concluding that all physical matter vibrates at its own innate frequency and wavelength. Mathematical representations of these vibrations, much like sound and light are sinusoidal waveforms. Waveforms are used as the primary visual motif and structural element in these works to aid in meaningfully describing concepts such as existence, being, becoming, and reality. The subject matter is celebrated for both its physical form and its hidden or invisible nature.

waveWORKS is a re-assessment of traditional visual representations of the physical world, utilizing several artistic traditions such as portraiture and still life to express a new consciousness and awareness of the fundamental nature of all matter: energy.
